We had trouble with yik yak at our school and many students were talked to about using it. I think it just shows this generations somewhat lack of respect and thoughfullness. Being able to post something anonymously with no consequences seems to be just fine. They don't communicate face to face. If you take their phones away from them they wouldn't know how to talk to each other. I think this is one of the problems with technology and something young people need to be educated about.

I've recently learned about Yik Yak from some of my athletes and in my opinion it just seems like pure trouble. From what I've heard, some of the posts are harmful but they're mostly provocative, cruel and highly inappropriate. I think schools should educate their students on the consequences of using this technology and how to better use technology in a more positive way. Personally, I've advised my athletes to just avoid it at all cost or use it at their own risk!

I have never heard of his application and know I am glad I did not know about it. It can be very offensive to anyone who reads some of the posts. I was offended by some of the comments that they published in this article. I think they could have left some things out. I feel like with every good piece of technology out there to help teach our students there is another bad piece that makes me wish we would not have technology in the classroom. No matter how much you work on making it a classroom friendly environment students will always find ways to ruin it for others and over step their boundaries.

Cyber bullying is a big issue, and it's something that CMU tries to take care of fairly quickly. The students in my building have been having some trouble with bullying over Yik Yak; many students fear that their reputation is being compromised on campus because it seems everyone uses the application and uses it to gossip about others. It is a troubling application, but it's possible to find out who wrote what. Recently, a student at Drake University in Des Moines, IA, threatened the school and he got arrested because the police found him through the app.

This app is nothing but trouble. I believe it allows students to make comments without having the consequences that go along with it. I firmly believe that schools should avoid anything close to these apps. Another app that I think is horrible is the SnapChat app. I know at times it can be fun but on the other side of that I think it can cause a lot of issues along the lines of being bullied.

I have never heard of this before, wow. I read through some of these and believe this is nothing but evil. It blows my mind that college students are bullying that harshly and at that level. I couldn't even imagine being part of that.

We discussed Yik Yak and many other apps like this at our PD day this year. Yik Yak does not seem to have anything positive going for it. It lets students post anonymous rude statements that does nothing but bring others down. I think people should be ashamed for even looking through the site. I like to be positive and this is not something I would use or even look at.

I know that there is a lot of harm in the things that it is being used for right now - but I can see that it was not meant for that. I have seen some of the screen shots of this app that have not been offensive or violent, but funny and harmless. I think that, like every form of communication that can be anonymous, it have the potential to get inappropriate. I can also see the potential for it to be harmless as well.

I have never heard of this app before. I think this is not a good app at all. As the article stated, there are too many opportunities for trouble. Threats, bullying and racism would run wild because of the fact that posts are anonymous. This type of app would bring out people want to cause trouble because it would be very hard to link the comments back to the person who made it. Sure there would be some people who would not make inappropriate comments, but that would be few compared to the total number who would probably use this app. With all of the great and useful apps that are already available, I don't feel ones like these should be promoted.

As a representative of a school or university I would not embrace Yik Yak. I have never used Yik Yak but I could see how this is creating problems all around the country. We teach our students to be careful what they write online because their name will be by that forever. With this app, apparently people can stay anything they want without responsibility or consequence. There may be entertainment positives but I feel the negatives are more important.

I am not a fan of this app myself. The internet is full of enough keyboard warriors and this app is only feeding the frenzy. It doesn't even require a user name. All this add does is give people a way to bash others without consequences.

Being a coach and having my players on this app. talking trash and making inappropriate comments just looks badly on the program and the university. I think that end though the posts are hidden from who sent the post i think that it is still a reflection of the person. I believe that if you have a problem with something that much to post it online then you should handle it off the computer like a true person.

I feel that the app is crazy stupid but it also serves as one of the cons of the internet as a whole. Like we all know, with anything great there will come bad things as well. I think this app is doing exactly what it was untended to do which is to create a conversation. As long as the conversation is going on they will make their money on it because so many people are running to it to see how it works and what it is. I agree with Conner, it can make a university, a team or organization look very bad if students choose to engage with it.

I think Yik Yak should be taken down completely. I recently installed the app because I was curious to see what it was all about and I was not a fan. Some of the posts were light hearted and funny, but for the most part the posts were mean and in my opinion a form of bullying.
