In this day and age, there are apps for everything. In a health education/promotion class, what app could the teacher use to that would engage the students and how so?
Digital Identity and Its Impact on Students’ Futures
As technology becomes more and more integrated into our daily lives, it is important for us to understand that everything we do online can be tracked in one way or another. This is not meant to cause paranoia, but rather to be looked at through an educated eye. The concept of digital identity is defined as, “an online or networked identity adopted or claimed in cyberspace by an individual, organization, or electronic device.” This identity is long lasting (even considered permanent to some) and can greatly impact a person’s future in ways that may be unforeseen, particularly by young people. Below is an article posted on the “Inside Higher Ed” website. Colleges and employers are now looking at a person’s digital identity to get a better grasp on what candidates are really like outside of an interview room. https://www.insidehighered.com/blogs/student-affairs-and-technology/digital-identity-development Post below your thoughts on the concept of digital identity and its impact on students. Do you think that students should be held accountable for posts made on their social media when they might not have known better? What can we do to help educate students about the importance of their digital identities? Do you think that a person’s online presence is a good portrayal of what they are like in a real social situation? Why would you want to use technology in your classroom? What benefits will it have?
Next year Health will not be offered as a class at the middle school level. Instead it will be taught in P.E. by Physical Education teachers. It was taken out of the Physical Education curriculum two years ago and made into a mandatory class for students based on the importance of the learning objectives. It has now been changed back to the responsibility of the Physical Education Department. With limited classroom space and often times only the use of the gymnasium, how would you use technology to help teach the health curriculum to a class when you have little or no room to work in?
Got Digital Dirt?
More and more employers are using search engines to uncover information about potential employees. CareerBuilder.com says they found that 51 percent of employers who research job candidates on social media said they’ve found content that caused them to not hire the candidate, up from 43 percent last year and 34 percent in 2012. Read this article from CNN called "DIgital Dirt Can Haunt your Job Search." While reading this short article, ponder these questions. 1. Have you googled yourself to see what information on the internet is available about you? 2. If you have your own website or blog, would you be comfortable if everyone read it's contents? 3. Do you have your addres or telephone numbers posted online? 4. Do you follow the rule that if you wouldn't want to read it or see it in the newspaper, don't include it online? 3. Do you belong to a social network site (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat etc)? 6. For each site would you be comfortable with your employer seeing what you post? Respond with your thoughts. YouTube can be an excellent tool to enhance learning in the classroom. I have provided a couple of links below about the use of YouTube in the classroom. Read over them and then give your views about using YouTube in the classroom. I also encourage you to provide a link of a YouTube video you have used or may want to use in the future in the class you teach.
http://edtechreview.in/news/611-tips-for-teachers-youtube-in-classroom http://learnitin5.com/How-to-use-Youtube-in-the-Classroom A You Tube video, that I could use in the class I teach, to help students learn the quadratic formula is:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gwz6d9NYz0 In my 8th grade health class, we are discussing the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle. This involves plenty of daily exercise, the proper nutrition, cutting out any use of drugs/smoking, promoting safe sex, etc. In today’s world it seems like these acts are not decreasing but actually increasing. Obesity is at an all-time high, it seems as if every time you walk in a middle school hallway, you see a teenage pregnancy and drugs are now the “cool” thing to do. Besides having a mandatory health class in middle school and high school, how else can we communicate and educate our younger generation about what it takes to lead a happy and healthy lifestyle? How young or at what age do you think these lessons should be taught? Should technology, for example apps/games, be applied to help teach these lessons?
In this day in age, students are bring cell phones, laptops, iPads, etc. to school on a daily basis. Not only are these devices showing up more and more at school, they are also disappearing at school just as fast. Whether a student has lost the device, or it gets stolen, many students don’t leave school with the devices they bring. The big question is – should schools be held responsible for any technology students bring to school that gets lost or stolen? Please find an article about school liability and bringing technology to school. Share the link as well as your thoughts about the article and topic.
In recent years, there has been a change in the idea of History Class ( Social Studies). With the demand for better Reading, Writing, and Math scores. I know going through public school system, history class was not that big of a deal. You could take more to fill your schedule but it wasn’t always required. I picked an article that tells why kids are not learning the simplest things in history class. Do you agree that we should keep pushing away from the idea of Social studies? Or do you think it’s something we must all learn? Read the article and tell me what you think.
