With the push towards technology in every aspects of our lives, from just about everyone being on social media, having the best cell phones and using the top technology in and out of the classroom. Is there a point in which the amount of technology that students are using or being forced to use is to much of an emphasis on technology? Should there be a limit on how much students use technology in the classroom and on assignments, or is the value of hand written work and using books instead of Google gone?

The longer I teach the more I seem to go back to basics. I write more on the white board and complete interactive lectures and activities more and more. It really doesn't matter what technology is available if the instructor and the students are not doing the required reading and information gathering to be prepared for class. Technology tends to make everything easier to update/change and for students to receive feedback but true learning takes work - both by the student and the instructor.

I agree 100%. Technology allows us to pull it all together. I think what we have to do is to reinforce what they are learning from the textbooks in many different ways, because learning styles are all so different.

I feel that technology is very helpful for both teachers and students, but for people to truly learn i feel that they need to be able to do research without using Google or Bing.

I always joke that I am an "old-school" teacher because I use more pencil/paper learning than many other people my age. I know how to use technology but I feel that I have been "burned" in the past due to my district's lack of technology. Therefore, I am less likely to try new things because I know the old way is always going to work. I say all of this because I think it illustrates that there is a still a need for paper/pencil/book work. Things can always be learned using the traditional ways and I don't think it will ever be fully out-dated.

I have thought about this myself. I think there are advantages and disadvantages to technology. I do not think our society should be so reliant on technology because technology can fail. What are we going to do if some day the technology shuts down or something happens? Society as a whole relies so much on it that as a whole most of us would be lost without it.

I think tech is amazing but I feel so sorry for the students right now, because they hardlyever go to a library and actually resource in a reall book and spend time looking for something. Back in my days in hs and midlle school I had it to go to library and spend a few hours looking for something and was pretty fun. Today you just have to google and its done. It is faster but maybe its not that fun.

I think students should be limited on the amount of technology they are allowed to use. A lot of students do not know how to go to the library and look for sources or recourses to help them with their homework. I think google is great and I use it all the time for help but I also am constantly going back to my text books to help me find answers. Technology can be a great tool but sometimes it doesn't have all the answers so students should know who to use other sources as well.

I love technology, but I believe there needs a good mix between technology and other sources. I would say you have to use a certain amount of technology and maybe hand written for the assignments. For example 5 assignments using technology 5 using something else and either let the students pick or you pick.

I think that in some cases, technology is indeed being overused. I feel some teachers try so hard to implement technology into their classrooms that they lose sight of the basic goal of transmitting the information to their students. When implementing technology, educators must be careful that educating students, not just using technology, remains the focus.

Honestly, until I got to college and was required to for several assignments, I had never used a library. Google was my best friend and I rarely used paper research. However, once I was forced to, I loved it! There is so much more you can learn by reading a whole article or book on a subject than by running a very specific search on google. I think we emphasize technology in the classroom way too much. Students need to learn to function without technology and be comfortable with that.

I am a firm believer that pulling out a book and writing information down is a much stronger form of learning than to be constantly flipping and typing on a laptop or cell phone. There is no auto correct and no copy and paste when you are writing information down by hand. It forces you to have to actually read all the information that you are planning to use instead of just skimming the parts that you are hoping to use. I do think that technology is a very useful tool but it need to have limitations in the class room.

I think that technology is the piece to the puzzle to provide students with various ways and methods to learn the materials from the textbooks. I don't feel we are getting away from textbooks. Maybe we are doing paper and pencil less, however, the various methods we are using through technology does assist the students to use what meets their needs to learn and be more engaged.
