I found this article on yahoo -- http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/advisor/heck-augmented-reality-142020250.html -- about augmented reality. What I would like to know is what kind of interaction my classmates would think this would be useful for in the classroom? A Good idea would be to be able to capture a picture of Abraham Lincoln and the image come to life digitally and recite some of his famous lines or talk about his views on slavery. Another would be to use the technology to scan a pencil and the pencil would then come to life in a lesson on goods describing where each of its parts come from in the world -the eraser, the lead, the wood and the metal.

The current school of thought is that students learn in different ways, some, by reading, some , by seeing, and some by doing. I can foresee a day when a virtual imaging situation will be used in the classroom. Can you imagine how much more enriched the learning experience will be if students can see a subject come to life and hear the lesson being spoken by the subject. A student is far less likely to remember what is being taught if the learning media is simply a teacher giving a lecture. Research conducted by Edgar Dale, an American educationist who developed the Cone of Experience, suggests varying retention rates when teaching is performed by each of the following means:

I believe that any edge we can give our children we should. Your percentages say it would more likely be a positive edge for our students. So we should find a way to integrate it within our teaching styles.

I agree, but how do we ingrate it, where will we find the time? I often worry that we only have so many minutes in the day and so much more we need.

Augmented reality would definitely bring learning to life for students in the classroom. I also think it would aid in retention of the information because they can relate it to a real life demonstration. I would love for someone to demonstrate it for me so I could learn more about it and how to use it. After reading the article in the original post, it appears to be engaging and interactive which would be great for students.

I believe that the more we can create lessons that are entertaining to children the more they will be able to learn. Almost anything is better then listening to some guy old guy lecture.

I believe that this is a prime example of how we can bring technology into the classroom that may create a positive learning experience for out students. I like the idea and think that it couldl be beneficial if integrated into our lesson plans. A good balance of progressive and traditional teaching techniques. For me personally, if this was a tool while I was in school, I probably would have paid attention a lot more. Its interesting and kind of changes our reality a little,

Yes, I agree it's a wonderful way to incorporate technology into the lesson. I would have loved to have seen something like this when I went to school. In fact, I would have been excited to have walked into some classes!! Not only would I have became interested, I would have also became involved.

I agree, as a student this kind of lesson would have been very exciting and really peaked my interest therefore I would be more likely to learn more from the experience because it was something that was actually very fun too.

With this type of technology, most of the kids that wouldn't pay attention in school, might have had a brighter future. This is something that some of the guys I knew liked and dreamed of. I think it can keep the students engaged just as they are to all new types of technology today. Find the right structure and curriculum and this might be an important tool in the near future.

I agree with what you said. This would have definitely been beneficial for me when I was in school especially in science. It was a class that I got an A in, but it would have been more interesting and engaging for me if this would have been used.

The story of Abraham Lincoln normally is an interesting one even for students my age group. However, if they could have some sort of ditigal image of him it would create such a text to real world connection. Social Studies itself in the younger grade levels are such a bore anyways and by creating something such as this it would create a lesson that would come to life so to speak. What an impact that would create on the students learning. They are like sponges anyways and if it grabs their attention its something they will surely remember. With this type of augmented reality theres no telling what type of knowledge they would gain,

I like your idea of using it as a real world connection. Any way of getting students on board with what you have to teach is really great. And even for a topic that is less interesting for them, something like this might really grab their attention and get them going from the start.

I agree this augmented reality could really have a lasting impact on students. I was always the student who loved social studies and history, but many of my classmates did not. Therefore, they probably did not learn much because they may have somewhat paid attention, but it did not leave a lasting impact on them. With this form of a lesson students would get a more realistic impact and I truly believe it would really peak there interest allowing them to be impacted by the lesson.

This is a really good way to get students engaged. For a lot of students, history seems really boring, so using this format to get them interested is a really great idea. And of course they'll learn something new. But using this as an introduction to the topic would be fun and engaging!

I agree this would be a great interactive, engaging tool for students. It seems as if it would aid in the learning and retention of information more than just reading in the text about a subject. I think teachers would probably also enjoy it at much as the student which would be great for bringing some fun back into teaching!

I agree ..if they were being taught a subject matter through AR, they may be able to retain that information more so than if they were learning it traditionally.

The augmented reality (AR) would allow teachers to bring their subject to life for the students. It can help them tell stories, bring science to life, and help students learn to read by associate words with the images. In researching to learn more about the topic, I learned there are apps available for the iPad to help with teaching. this would be a great area to provide technology training for educators so they could explore what AR can really do and how they can incorporate it into their classrooms. I'm now interested in learning more about it and actually seeing how a teacher uses it for lessons in class. Great blog topic!

I would love to see how a teacher uses it for lessons as well. In all actuality, I would love to be the student again. Learning in this manner could be so enlightening and really brighten the light for those who may be lost in the dark.

To have your lesson presented to you in such graphic detail would be an awesome way to learn or get examples of what the teacher is expanding on. The opportunities for students that can utilize these tools for scientific purposes are endless. Cool tool for criminology majors!

To be able to scan an image or item and then bring it to life in a whole different way is an amazing way to get all students engaged in the subject at hand. Any subject that a student finds to be boring can be brought about in a different manner and leave cause for interest. Augmented reality seems like a great idea. Each day would be something different. The idea would completely erase boredom in the classroom.

Remember the holodeck on the Starship Enterprise? I wonder how far we are away from that kind of technology. It would be an awesome notion if a teacher or instuctor could interact with a student in this type of virtual environment. With voice recognition and the proper database, the student might even be able to ask the holograhic teacher questions and receive appropriate resposes.

I completely agree! School would be so much more interesting with this technology. This could be the best idea I've heard yet about keeping students interest in the classroom, and engaging their minds. More students may actually be excited to go to school with such a technology.

As others have said, AR would be an awesome way to bring teaching to life in a fun, new way. And I think it would make students excited about learning a subject they might not otherwise be very interested in. I know that if I had had AR in some of my science or history classes, I most likely would have been much more engaged. I like this approach to teaching!

I was always interested in social studies and history but adding augmented reality to it would have been even more engaging than any lesson I have seen. As others have said it brings the lesson to life in a way that is fun and exciting. I certainly would like to look into adding augmented reality to my math class in some way if possible.

Math was the hardest subject that I faced growing up. It wasn't until my undergrad years that I truly began to understand math. Having AR in the classroom could have helped me to understand a little easier in my earlier years.

This would have been so cool when I was in school. I can't even imagine how enhanced my learning experiences would have been, and how much more I would have paid attention. It would bring so much more life to every lesson that was taught. Even the most boring subjects could be enhanced by this technology. I think this would be a great tool to enhance student learning on so many levels in the classroom.

I love the idea of having anything come to life when it comes to teaching our students. really loved the idea of scanning a pencil and then being able to find out about the wood etc. I would love to be able to bring life to math for my sons.

I also agree that this would have been an exciting experience for me also. In my opinion, the use of this technology will inspire a few young people into wanting to design or create such technology at some point in his/her life. There are many ways to implicate certain technology and finding the right age to use this will be important. The younger kids will definitely be engaged in a lesson that involves.this type of technology.
