In the race for technology, and there for funding for technology, in schools, math and literacy are often forerunners. "Special" or "encore" subjects are often overlooked as areas where technology can be employed. However, as an art teacher, I know that there is a growing need for tech savvy artists and students who are prepared to enter the workforce must have an understanding of how to implement technology in thier art. The following blog post has a simple list of ways that an iPad can be used in the artroom, even if there's only one per class. What are your thoughts on employing technology in areas such as art, music and P.E.? Is it worth the extra funding? Are the arguments strong enough when budgets are tight? And if the budget is tight, what can be done with only one iPad to an entire class?

I loved how the teacher was able to use 1 Ipad in the classroom and find a way to make it work. I do believe that every student should be prepared with technology in every aspect of dept in the school systems. Every single job they need to be prepared for uses some kind of technology so Yes I agree they should be able to find a way to fund techology in areas such as art, music and P.E.. Even if it is just one Ipad, its better than having no technology at all.

I agree, it seems like one cannot turn a corner without seeing a piece of technology. I know that personally if it weren't for technology, I would probably never leave my bed (Thank goodness for alarm clocks and cell phone alarms for back up!)

I agree. Even if it is the minimal amount, all schools need to find some way to incorporate technology somehow into every classroom setting, no matter what the subject is. Everywhere we turn we see technology working in some form, and it is best to learn young about what is out there in the world.

I agree that each student should be introduced and taught about the new technology that is available to the public now. It is not only the jobs but even everyday household appliances are becoming high-tech today. The way we listen to music, watch film in sports or take a photograph has changed tremendously in the last 10 years and it will not stop for anyone. We must learn to adapt with the change in time or we will all be left behind.

I agree I thought how the teacher was able to utilize only 1 iPad was very resourceful. I wish every area was able to have the same advantages as the regular classroom. It does seem as though they get either the left overs or theres just not enough for them. Even if budgets are tight I do feel that school districts should not leave these special or encore subject out. They are serving children just the same as other areas in the school district. That's the whole reason we are all here. Every child should be able to take part in technology despite which subject or which classroom they are in at the time. It should still be accessible. I understand budgets are tight and if the school district can only affort 1 per classroom then 1 is better than none. However, to deprive classrooms none based on their titled is crazy, they are still serving children. Those children in that classroom still deserve the right to experience the technology.

I love the article you posted, particularly the video showing all of the different things an art teacher could do with an iPad in the class to engage students and explore different avenues of creativity through technology. The difficult thing is finding the funding in school budgets to be able to provide this type of technology for more students in classes like art, music and PE.

Really cool! Thank you so much for sharing. An iPad might have to be my next major purchase for my room. There is just so much you can do with it, even if there is only one. I'm going to save that link to use later. And my principal recommended including technology in my PD plan next year (there's that push for technology again), so it could really be an asset. Thanks!

If schools budgets have the funding available, instructors can get creative in using technology with students in special subject classes like art, music and PE. Incorporating as much technology as possible is going to benefit students in the future for the college education and careers. Using the iPad in the classroom was a great idea even if there is only one per classroom. Like we saw in one of our earlier class blogs, teachers can use computers and mobile devices to Skype with artists to discuss different types of art work and have students watch a live demonstrations of artists using different mediums to create artwork. Art students can also use technology to create digital portfolios of their art work in class. They can use computer programs and applications to be creative and play with different types of music in a music class. Students could also use health and fitness programs to engage them in exercising by tailoring the programs in a PE class to their individual needs and goals and track their progress throughout the semester or year. There are a variety of ways technology can be incorporated into these classrooms that would engage and benefit the students, however, school administrators and teachers have to decide on the current priorities and funding available in the school budget before investing in technology for these types of classes.

I think it would be great to use SKYPE for a variety of classess. You could to take visual tours of museums for art, view a symphony for art class, or watch a demonstration for PE. And that is just on SKYPE. Their is so much that can be done with technology, it is usually the funding that hampers efforts.

Skype would be a great use for classes like music and PE. You could have numerous special guests in class that students would otherwise not get the opportunity to meet.

I agree using skype would have a bunch of positive effects and the students could really get out of the actual classroom virtually and explore different aspects of the subject through just one ipad.

I do not think that any subject can be left out of technological devices and usage. Even if artwork is created by hand, it can still be presented to the world using digital media and social networking. Students need to learn those sites and how to correctly display what they want their art to depict. Posting a gray picture of a sculpture does not capture the artists' intent. Teaching students how to use photo apps and graphics will heighten the artwork. Music class can use technology to interact with students across the world in various types of music programs they can work together on or create music pieces together with other students. Computer editing programs can be taught to students to enhance music and create different sounds. Students in PE can do something as simple as have a day with an XBOX Kinect "playing " fun games to exercise. An ipad can be used to track their body movements to improve their physical performance.

So true! Students don't have to create the work on the computer/iPad in order for technology to be utilized in their art. There are websites like Artsonia where student artwork can be displayed for families, community, and the public. Another good use for an iPad in the art room.

I really like the idea of having a site where students can post their work for friends and family members to see, instead of it just going up on the fridge and being forgotten!

You've brought up a really good point. Students need to be aware of how to use the iPads in order to enhance their learning. iPads are not just about gettting apps to play educational games but it must provide students greater access to a wide range of resources which empowers them to become more independent learners. I think it's important for students to know the vocabulary for iPads such as home buttom, wifii, share button, pinch, zoom, and so on. Using the vocabulary during teaching and students knowing it will speed things along and it will be less of a disruption. Even one iPad can enhance and transform the learning of a classroom!

I am really glad you posted the website for Mrs. Fuglestad's class. I had no idea that iPads could be used in such ways. Now that I have an understanding of how they can be used for a variety of ways, I would say that employing them in areas such as art, music, and P.E. would be a great idea. I believe this with the understanding that interaction away from the device would still take place as well (especially in P.E.). Current day youth are born into automatically having a knack with technology. A Kindle is their textbook. If studies show these to be beneficial, then yes, the funding is worth it. When budgets are tight, they may be more beneficial to employ on the basis that tests scores will rise. The rise of scores means the rise in delegated monies. Yes, I believe it can be done with one Ipad in the classroom. Technology in the classroom started with one projector. Students bloomed from that. I believe the Ipad would be similar.

I agree. The probloem is the schools or the teachers in the classroom want more. They want a device for each student so that they can brag about how many they have in their classroom. I believe all departments should be able to make it work with just one device in the classroom. Yea they have to be innovative and creative but at least they have a form of technology that they can use to incorporate within the classroom.

I think there are definitely ways to make one iPad work. Even if students have a limited amount of time on an iPad, they are being exposed to and getting to know how to navigate one in ways they haven't before (for example, in an art class).

I agree that all students should have access to learn the proper way to navigate and use the technology. If this meant that the kids had a time period per class and only once per weekm this would definitely be an advantage than no exposure at all, I personally don't care what class has the technology as long as every kid has the opportunity to learn in his course scheduled classes.

I think employing technology in all subjects is a great idea. Yes some subjects are better suited using technology than others, but all subject I feel should at some point try an implement some form of technology in some way to help with student learning. Technology drives all fields around the world today so it important that students learn to use technology in numerous areas even if some may not be as much as others.

I agree, that some subjects are more susceptible to technology, but can also see ways in which technology can be used in subjects such as P.E. As a student, I never really did relate well with P.E. class due to my lack of athletic ability. However, if I had the ability to see how each exercise benefited my body through virtual diagrams, I may have been interested.

I heard a news segment on the radio a few days ago that stated two-thirds of all the jobs that will be held by children in elementary school have not been invented yet. That is simply astounding, but not farfetched. Consider at the rapid pace of technology over the past 40 years. This past week we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the first cell phone call place by Martin Cooper, The former Motorola vice president and division manager of Motorola. Look at where we are today with that same technology, a cell phone is just a single function of our currents smart phones. The smart phone is in reality a small hand held PC that carries out many of the same functions as our desktop computers. It is always in our best interest to introduce our students to the most current technology available if we intend on maintaining a technological edge in the industrialized world.

This only adds to my thoughts and desire to have an ipad in my classroom. I would love to be able to incorporate it along with the use of Apple TV in class. With all the applications that can be used for math, I am sure that it would have great value in the art and possibly music class. Not too sure about PE. I think especially for an art teacher though because of all the art applications that can come with the ipad.

The expansion of technology is so rapid that I don't think any areas/subjects in schools should be left on the short-end of this era. The idea of having even just one iPad is still better for the students than having nothing at all. Their interaction time with the device may be short, but they are still being exposed to what they will need an education on in their future away from school. Technology can be used in so many ways that it's insane to think that there is no reason for an elective course such as gym, music, or art to not have the technological resources that can be put into a regular classroom. I think one of the most effective ways for students to use technology is to connect with real world professionals. Professionals of specific areas such as music or art could teach our students probably just as, if not more, effectively than our teachers. Not saying that teachers aren't effective, because they most definitely are, but sometimes it's kind of cool to learn from a professional. It also can help the students that don't listen really well realize that perhaps their teacher does understand a thing or two. Professionals can teach from a distance, yet still be right there in the classroom with our students. Skype would be a great tool to utilize for this reason. The great thing about this too is that all you need is a computer, projector, and a projection screen to make it work.

I believe that the if an iPad increases the ability to learn and teach the subject no matter what the subject is then it is worth the money for the technology. What really is the price for teaching our youth?

Unfortunately there is really a price. With the country we have today where the government is sequestering money and making more cuts in what is spent for education (Which is funny, because I thought Obama planned to increase that part. Guess that went to all that aid for Egypt.) it is becoming more and more difficult for schools to provide this in a classroom. As I heard one teacher say the other day, students will be as engaged as you are and for those who aren't, that is why we differentiate our instruction.

I am a complete advocate when it comes to the use of technology, in any arena, not just education. My eldest daughter graduated with a graphics design/commercial printing degree and her entire livelihood centers on the use of technology. Whether it be creating and manipulating designs on a Mac, or adjusting colors and pixels on a printer, she is embedded into technology. That is the standard for this era; we are a technology based society and as such, we owe it to our students, even at a very young age, to learn how to use technology.

What a great idea to start an art project on the ipad and then pass it around the room until it is complete. I know there are so many ways to incorporate ipads and love hearing what other teachers have to share.

I think the time has come for every class room to have at least one tool such as an ipad in the room. There are almost endless ways that it can be used in the class setting and even just using skype or watching an educational video on youtube is effective in some situations. With the addition of so many apps that can be purchased or downloaded for free, this has huge upside potential that can't be ignored for much longer.
