As a classroom teacher in Missouri Public Schools, a huge focus is the Common Core State Standards. (They are now being known as the Core Academic Standards-Who knows what we will call them next…) Schools are also under a large budget crunch, which is impeding our growth in technology advances. One of the largest concerns our district is facing is: How are we going to accommodate the technology standards as well as the testing online, itself?

What are your thoughts and/or suggestions for this push and need for technology?

The link provided will give you some background information on what schools in the U.S. are facing. Be sure to click on the slideshow to view.

When I was in second grade, I learned how to write in cursive. Throughout elementary school I was required at various times to write in cursive. My younger sister is now in eighth grade. Like me, she learned cursive at a young age. However, she has not been required to write in cursive since then. It was important that she learned it, but it is not important for her to use now. In their future jobs they will need to be very knowledgable in technology, so why not prepare them for their futures?

It is important for our students to use technology as much as possible. I don't think it can be a complete shift, but it must be a gradual change.

I feel like students need to learn through technology because some day they will probably use it for their job. Right now, we take a lot of assessments online. We are using the computers for assessment and then we don't have time for teachers to use them for other work in their classrooms. If we have to start taking everything online, we are going to need more computers, but with what money? That is a problem we are facing everywhere I think.

I think that it's important to teach the students more about technology instead of the old school paper and pencil writing. Before Carter's final, I haven't written a paper or an essay since elementary school. Majority of schools are converting all testing to computerized tests, homework is usually turned in online instead of in person and a lot of the lessons that teachers teach are online in powerpoint form. I think that it is more important to push teachers and students to learning more about technology.

It is important that curriculum addresses the use of available technology and also incorporate it into the classroom lesson plans. Technology is always evolving and school districts should ensure that their students are taught relevant technology standards and how to use current technology so that they are prepared for the real world and can adequately compete for jobs in the future.

This is an important topic. The common core standards are being put in place all over the state. Technology is being used more and more. In college is when my technology usage really increased I started turning my papers in online, my teachers would post the outlines or powerpoints online and expect us to have them ready for class. It's important to teach technology usage early beacuse they will be using it more and more as they go through school.

As technology becomes more and more important in today's society and in future jobs there is demand to teach technology to students. As others have mentioned, teaching technology is necessary because it is out future. Instead of making technology an elective class, I believe it should move to be a core class. Just as history or english are important to develop the future of our nation, so is technology. Unfortunately, I believe the demand for technology teachers is too high to meet the current need within our schools. This is an issue that should be brought to the forefront if the United States wants to continue to be a future world leader.

Technology is becoming more important each year and so it is important that we prepare our students accordingly. I agree that technology should be a core class and not an elective but I have so many questions regarding this as well. How do we get technolgy, computers, etc to those rural area schools that just don't have the funding? How do not leave children behind in these areas? Many decisions are going to have to be made.

Technology is important but I really don't see the need for every student to have their own tablet/computer. I think it is important for a teacher to use technology in the classroom but I don't see the why the use of the computer lab does not suffice for hands on exposure. A typical high school student has 7 classes a day with 4 of the being "core" classes. If each teacher is doing their job, each student will have lots of exposure to technology through out the school year. Part of me thinks that the thought every student needs every piece of technology feeds into the entitlement attitude many of our citizens (particularly youth) have today.

I have no experience as a classroom teacher but I do know that I really commend you all that do because I could not imagine the amount of work adn things you have to keep up with. I think that it is hard to transition to the high push for technology standards and combining with the common core standards. I feel that administration and schools district officals should do a better job of helping teachers transition.

Our society seems to be moving into a more technological-based learning atmosphere. I believe that young students should have some sort of technology class that not only teaches them safe effective use of technology, but also about the different software that they will most likely use in the future.

Right now I don't think schools should try and go overboard with buying or upgrading technology at this point. I feel like they should slowly do it when their budget allows for it. Which might not be for a while, but schools should place their money on things they need right now and not technology. I know that some schools can't pay for their teachers but try to make room for other non-essential items. But then again, school budgeting is not something I am any kind of expert in.
