Next year Health will not be offered as a class at the middle school level. Instead it will be taught in P.E. by Physical Education teachers. It was taken out of the Physical Education curriculum two years ago and made into a mandatory class for students based on the importance of the learning objectives. It has now been changed back to the responsibility of the Physical Education Department. With limited classroom space and often times only the use of the gymnasium, how would you use technology to help teach the health curriculum to a class when you have little or no room to work in?

I would incorporate use of iPads and tablets if the funding allows it. If not I would use projectors when there is not a white board to write on. I would take the time to have more stations to work on different projects in the Gymnasium to allow for students to get more activity while working on different projects relating to health. It would be great if there was funding for iPads or other tablets then you can have the students break up into small groups and have them work on the tablet together or have the tablet have tasks for them to do so they can work their way through a series of problems or lessons to build teamwork and learning.

If I was a P.E. teacher and had limited space to teach a health class, I would definitely try to use some kind of projector or portable T.V. with a VCR/DVD player to show videos and other visual material. I would also try to utilize iPad’s (if available), and maybe even take my students to a computer lab/library if it was available. A lot of health content could be taught in the confines of a gym, due to the fact that health-related information normally deals with physical activity, health-conscious decision-making, etc. In my middle school, we were taught a few basic health-related lessons once a week during P.E. We watched videos on a projector in the gym, or used a T.V. with a VCR to watch health videos. A lot of the things we did also were hands-on, such as acting out different scenarios of what we would do in certain situations (offered drugs, bullying, etc.). If a P.E. class had just a few basic pieces of technology, I don’t think space would be an issue.

It’s really hard to visualize something unless you are forced upon to actually perform and teach students with very scarce and limited resources. If I was in this situation I would defiantly try and get a classroom that was not used that hour from another teacher, on days that I really needed to use a projector or some kind of technology. I was demonstration on the human body; I would go to the science department and get some kind of manikin to show the kids then use a computer. If nothing else was there to use, I would go with the use if and IPad or some other technology device. Getting the use of a TV, to use a HMI cord to project highly detailed videos with the use of one computer could also be a possibility. There are always more and more options. Those would be my things to choose if had to be.

I think some of the ideas brought up before were great. The use of iPads, TVs and computers could be of great use. If you had guest speakers that came in and talked to the class that might help as well since the students won't be hearing just one voice the entire year. There are plenty of ways around only having a little space to use and these are just a few examples.

This actually happened at my former school I taught at. The Health class ended up using the Family and Consumer Sciences that hour because it was that teacher's planning period. Unfortunately at this time, the only technology available in this classroom was computers. If I were in this situation I would try to get access to iPads or tablets, a TV and/or VCR/DVD player so that I could get the students more involved.

If the class had to meet in the gym, I would ask for a computer to be available in the gym whose screen could be projected onto a screen. I would then show different videos over certain different health topic. Assignments could then be posted within a Google Classroom where students could submit assignments over the different topics.

I think (if available) I would definitely use Ipads/Tablets in order to bring technology into a classroom setting that may not be available. This way, you can still have lessons and a form of research to perform assignments, papers, etc. I would really like to see the Health class being separate however from the Physical Education side of things. I think there is a big difference between the two and there is a lot to be learned on each subject instead of squeezing them both together.

I would personally use the Google classroom this is a very useful tools specially if there is no time to meet, this would be the perfect way to get the material out there for the students, post important information for the students, and they can still do the work and submit to the professor without having to meet, and all the information will be in the class in the Google classroom drive.

I believe that the use of iPads or computers would be great for this. They would be very helpful tools in the learning the material. I do agree with Simon though too the Google Classroom would be a really good way to see the material and also be able to submit work without even having to meet for class. The Google Drive is a great thing to use, we use it for football and it has really helped us stay organized and on task with alot of things and we can all access it to at anytime.

I think that use of tablets could help these teachers out in their classroom. The digital age is upon us and it makes it way easier for teachers to deal with problems like switching responsibilities between health and PE. Google drive is something that we use in the football office and it really helps keep track of all of our documents and spreadsheets. You could also use a projector to expedite the teaching process if one is available

In my school, teachers can "rent out" laptops and projectors. So I think that perhaps integrating a "mobile classroom" would be good. You can usually find a wall to project onto to give presentations, show pictures, and stream videos. The school also has a BYOD policy in place, so students could use their mobile devices to supplement instruction.

I would probably use some sort of projector or TV at the bare minimum. I would try and find something that would keep my kids interested and most of all active. If I had the funding or ability, I would use the Google apps. I would then be able to share it will all my students and they could access it from their phones or tablet/iPads. I would do some sort of competition in the class and have certain marks that every student needs to reach in order to receive a certain grade.

In my mind the course Health Education belongs in a classroom but possibly not one of its own as I believe it can be integrated into other courses such as Biology, Home Economics, and possibly a short term course that could be technologically facilitated that also has attachment to some type of care learning in modules where for example a certificate in CPR and/or Baby Sitting could be earned. Healthcare providers successfully use technology based care learning modules to enhance their employee skill sets while meeting regulatory requirements. Therefore, the use of such technological tools is already proven and could meet accrediting educational criteria at the junior or high school level rather easily.
