We have talked about using technology for students and teachers; however, I believe that a big part of all this is the parents or guardians of the students.  I think it is highly important that the parents are involved with teaching the students the proper usage of technology at home.  There is so much pressure on the teachers to make the student a productive person, a smart individual, and a proper citizen.  However, there should be more emphasis placed on parenting, and when it comes to teaching and learning technology, it shouldn't be any different.  What ideas do you have for including parents or guardians in the development of technology in the students?

I think the standards/rules for teachers apply the same for parents. They should be aware of what their kids are doing with technology. They should be able to use the technology their kids are using. They should be constantly looking for new ways to help their kids better use technology and for new technology for their kids to use.

Yes, the same standards should apply for parents just as for teachers. Parents should be aware of what and how their children are using technology. The responsibility for all instruction should begin and be reinforced by parents.

I mentioned this just earlier today. A lot of community colleges offer technology courses for the older generation. I think it would be awesome if schools took it upon themselves to offer technology courses to the community they serve. It would increase parent involvement and build parent teacher relationships.

I agree too that the reponsibility should lie with parents. Professional development options for parents would be a great idea to offer through schools, community colleges, or even within the community. Technology issues and responsibility should be taught and enforced at home as the first means of instruction and then schools and teachers reinforce the common goals and guidelines.

I definately think parents should be aware of what their children are doing with technology. I am a firm beleiver in checking up on my kids (whether it be checking their facebook, texts, etc). I think parents also need to be able to use technolgy effectively. Programs for parents of students would be a great idea to utilze in our school districts. Reading nights could become Tech nights and parents could come and learn about technology with their kids.

Angie, I agree totally that as parents it is our responsibility to be the mentor and teacher to our children so that they learn proper usage and skills when utilizing technology. Everyone in society needs to be evolving with technology and its uses so that communication and learning can continue throughout our lives.

Parent need to be inloved with technology like they are with homework. Technology will be used without our lives and will keep growing. Parents need to be more involved!

"I think it is highly important that the parents are involved with teaching the students the proper usage of technology at home."

I couldn't agree more with the above statement! With any part of a child's education, technology or not, I believe parents should be involved. They need to guide, encourage, and help their children to be good learners. In terms of digital citizenship, they need to educate their children about potential online dangers and how to safeguard against them.

Like the others who've already commented in this blog, I believe school districts could offer courses on technology for the parents. They could also include "tech notes" on the back of weekly papers that are already sent home. There could be "tech nights" with special presentations designed for helping parents with their children in terms of technology. One thing my kids' district already does that educates me, is to require that I sign a "technology usage agreement" every year indicating that I understand the district's expectations of how my kids should/shouldn't use technology while at school. If we really stop and think about it, we could come up with a lot of opportunities to involve parents!

I think having courses for parents on technology is a great idea. A lot of times Parents may not know much about technology. The student could be farther along than the parent. I think it's important for the parents to really push safety when using the internet they need to teach their kids what is safe to put up on the internet and what is not. they need to check up on the internet usage and what pages their kids are visiting. The parent just needs to work together with thir kid and work out an agreement on the expectations.

I am a firm believer in students also being taught about technology at home. I think that parent involvement at home will help keep the student on task and out of trouble. I would suggest maybe a parent teacher conference at the beginning of the school year where the teacher can introduce them to the class and what technology will be used so that parents are in the loop, and can help the students at home.

I strongly believe that collaborative learning between parents and students strengthens trust and understanding. This is true too with technology. If parents and children are working together to share knowledge and guidelines for technology than a stronger relationship can be built. When a child believes that their parents are "tech savy" they are far more likely to act responsible online.
I agree with Mike about speaking with parents at a Parent Teacher Conference about technology that will be used through the course of the year. Further more if the teachers gave out a tip packet or guideline for how parents can work with their children at home, they could be more prepared to focus on technology at home. When parents and teachers are working together to support and benefit the student, a comfortable learning environment is made.

I most likely mentioned this in one of my posts earlier in the semester. Kids should actually teach the parent how to use new technologies rather than the other way around. Give a kid a smart phone and within a week he/she'll be able to tell you how to do things with it as good as any customer service support, and he/she is right there so collaboration works much better.
