I think using skype in the classroom is a great idea. It gives students access to all different kinds of people and teaching styles. Teachers would be able to air skype discussions in class or record them and have the students watch at home. An idea going around is a school reform where the teachers only teach through skype and not in front of the classroom. This would allow for the very best teachers to teach students all over the world. What are your ideas on this topic?

I believe using Skype in the classroom would be very effective in some situations. Using it to allow students to communicate to other classes or a guest speaker. Unfortunately the computer system at my school is not set up to do this. Hopefully in the near future.

I think with good monitoring, Skype could be very useful in most classrooms, especially those subjects like English. It could be use to talk with experts in the field, ask and answer questions, watch seminars and workshops and even speak to the authors of the books we use in the classroom. I think it would be a very effective and creative way to engage the students.

Skype might be a great idea for older classrooms, but I dont think it would be as effective in elementary classrooms. My students would not have the attention span. I think they would need an in person speaker. Middle school and high school students could benefit from guest speakers on Skype or communicating with fellow classrooms in different countries. Skype could be used for some great projects with researching how schools operate in other places.

I think using Skype in lessons for students is a great idea. The students see the teacher everyday teaching lessons, they may see people in video clips talking about different topics, but seeing a person in real time being able to interact with the class is wonderful. Skype allows students to have interactions and hear ideas from people who have specialties in the areas they are learning. Students learning about the ecosystems of a lake could hear and ask questions to a conservation agent. The possibilities are endless with whom students can interact and learn from. I believe the time should be limited for earlier grades and more time allowed for middle school and upper grades. Using Skype on the level of the students participating would enhance any lesson. I would love to learn more about Skype and try it in my classroom!

I think using Skype for a teaching purpose is in genus because some of the best speakers possibly cant make a trip to the classroom can now meet with classes through Skype. I wish I had this when I was attending school because I think that it could have been a useful tool.

I think Skype would be great in certain classrooms and for certain ages. For example, younger students may have problems paying attention if the teacher were using Skype to teach. However, I think it would work well with high school students. I've also talked to foreign language teachers and a few of them had "language partner" systems with students from other countries and they Skyped with each other to help each other learn the other's language, and I think this is something that Skype can help a lot with.

I personally love using Skype at the college level. I utilize Skype to meet with students who unable to come into my office to enroll in classes or need to speak with an advisor face to face but are unable to commute. On a regular basis I use Skype to meet with a few of my military students who are stationed out of state or even out of the country. We also utilize Skype to conduct some long distant learning activities.

Using Skype in the classroom would be pretty cool for the students to be introduced to this new idea of technology. I know that I have used it before to study with one of my college friends and it was what I thought the coolest things!

I think we've talked about this before - I think it would be GREAT to use Skype in the classroom. My fiancé used Skype often in some of his undergrad classes to talk to writers in other states. He felt that it was an experience he would not have had if Skype wasn't available!

Skype in the classroom can be a great tool for learning. If the teacher is proactive and talking to experts to help them teach their class then it will be able to work out well. A special classroom that is set up with microphones and sound proof walls is usually a good classroom to have. It would also be good to Skype with other classes from around the country to be able to learn with each other.

Before I read this article I had heard of teachers using skype for guest lecturers. Skype can be useful in so many more functions. Parent teacher conferences can be done with the convenience of parents not having to drive from home or work. Teachers can also reach out to other teachers to learn new lessons and teaching techniques, to better their professional development. Students can talk to other children from across the globe. Teachers can create pen pal project or book discussions with other schools. To make sure these lessons go according to plan, teachers must plan before time. Make sure the setting is right, whether its the classroom or library. Also, it might be a good idea to record a skype session with an author or guest speaker so you can reference it or play it for another class later.
