Digital Footprints are trails and traces that we leave online. A few different methods that can be used to ensure that students are aware of their digital footprint include;

That's a great idea - to have the students Google themselves! I remember in high school, we talked about what people look for when they are interviewing you. Our teachers always discussed having our online life remain appropriate because people would be able to search for us and find things about us! I have always kept things online professional to ensure that anyone that tries to research me will see that I am nothing special :)

I actually traced my digital footprints this year and found a trail. I think having students Google themselves is the best way to show them how their personal information is shared. The results may shock some students because it can link you to family members and others you have associated with. I think digital footprints is an important topic to discuss with students.

During our student orientations we stress digital footprints. During the session we have each student Google themselves to see what information already exist on them. We also make sure they understand that even if they think they have removed the information more than likely the information is still out there somewhere.

as high school teacher we have discussed digital footprints and what is out there. Many of my students have already googled themselves and are starting to be aware that everything they do is out there. Many were shocked at the things that were there especially things they thought were gone .

I think this is very important to do. It would scare some students what they have put out there on the internet for others to see, stays. This will help some of them think twice. I think it's important for them to be educated over this.

I think this is something that students definitely need to be aware of, even with seemingly anonymous online forums and apps. When students see that they are anonymous, they don't take into account that many times, it is still possible to track who they are. Students definitely need to be careful with what they post online as it can always be traced back to them and sometimes it will affect their future career when hiring managers Google them.

I agree with you. Some kids don't care, but then when they finally are taught what really happens, chances are it's too late.

I think it is a very good idea to teach students about digital footprints. Many students do no think about their safety while on the internet. Students need to know how to be safe and not share personal information on the internet such as social media. They need to be informed that where they go on the internet, information they post, etc. can be traced back to them. I think having students Google themselves is a very good idea. It can give them an idea of what other can track about them on the internet. Students need to be taught how to be safe while using all of the different types of technology available!

I really enjoyed this post here because I wasn't aware of what digital footprints were all about until now. As a coach, I have never heard other coaches speak on this topic to their players so this is a bit new to me. Yes, I am aware of whats online about me and I do know that others can be googles as well but as a coach I never made this an issue or topic of discussion to the players that I do coach. Because of this post though I will be more in tuned with this and begin telling other coaches about it to be sure they pass it on to their players as well.

I would make sure my student athletes knew about the proper steps of digital footprints along with the safety of how to use the internet properly. Digital footprints can affect students by displaying certain information to the public that you dont want people to see.

Often young students do not realize the consequences of their actions until it is too late, then they learn. As educators, we cannot stand around and wait for a child to make a mistake online. It is too dangerous. I think activities that get students thinking of the real life implications from their online activity will be the most effective. Showing them how ignorance can lead to trouble will help them realize that their safety, job security, and educational future are at stake.

Students and kids these days have no idea about the amount of digital stuff they put into the internet. They also have no idea that all of the information they put into cyber space stays there. Anyone can get ahold of all the pictures, posts, and other information they posted through out the years to hurt them. This is a smart way of incorporating some technology into the classroom by sharing the ways that it can hurt our kids and students. Every teacher should take time out of their busy schedule to go through this with their students.

I think students are becoming more aware of the dangers of posting information online. It is always a good idea to remind kids of the effects of posting inappropriate things online can have on their lives, such as not getting a job, .
