If you had a child with autism in your classroom, how would you utilize the technology that you had available?
While technology can be helpful in general education classrooms, it can make a huge impact on children with disabilities. My career path is a little different than most getting their Masters in Education. I am hoping to work closely with parents and their children diagnosed with Autism. This video discusses the impact that has been seen when children with autism utilize iPads.

From what I have learned and know about Autism I think using technology would highly effective with many of these students. I do not have a child with autism in my room but I do think it could allow them to work better in a traditional classroom.

I really like this questions because during my undergrad years I worked with the sweetest little girl who was suffering from autism. I worked as a direct support professional for families with children who suffered from this disease and we did alot on the iPad. This was her main and preferred way of communication. There were Apps for everything; when she wanted food, snacks, to go for a walk, bathroom and other needs. It was incredible how much easier it made communication, I was impressed!

I do not have a student with autism in my classroom, but I bet technology has a major impact on improving communication between teacher and student. Using the Ipad for language would be like giving your student a voice. Apps that speaks the words can also help with language.

I do not personally work with any students with autism but I will say that I know friends that do work closely with them and I asked them how they use technology. A few of them said that they don't actually use any technology with their autistic students because they feel that working with them engaging with other students and teachers seem to work best for them. But other friends said that they use apps on top of apps on iPads and small tablets that helps them pretty much do anything when it comes to learning. I thought both had great points but I personally don't work with autistic students so it was cool seeing both sides.

I definitely think using iPads with autistic children is a great idea. I have had an autistic student mainstreamed into my classroom and he loved using technology. He would focus better and loved trying to answer questions while using Google Earth. I believe using iPads would help autistic students focus better and have more confidence in trying to communicate thoughts and answers to school work.

I think the technology used in the video was definitely beneficial for the students with autism. I had friends that had a child with autism and they used similar technology and it work tremendously well and helped him develop communication that he didn't have other wise because of his disease. so I think the technology can assist in the development of speech and can assist in the classroom and should be used.

While I have never worked with a child with Autism in an educational setting, I did babysit one when I was in high school, and one of the main issues he had in school was the inability to communicate with others and this frustrated him a lot. I think utilizing an iPad or other device to help children with Autism spectrum disorders communicate would be a great value to their education.

I think using technology is a great way to work with children who suffer from autism. While working at the Boys & Girls Club we had a young man who would really benefit from it. I think the technology gives the individual a chance to express themselves in ways they may not be able to normally do. I also feel that by allowing the technology in the classroom it would make the student feel more included in the class.

Technology in special education classrooms can be huge. The teachers will need to know how to use the technology and make sure the kids are working on what they should be working on. I have seen some kids learn lessons by using the computer. A young man in my school will go up the library and get an khanacadamy to learn the math lessons for that day. He went from failing the class to passing with flying colors. If used right anyone can learn from it.

I am currently in this situation. When my student is in my classroom he will use my laptop and play educational games while the other kids are working on tasks. He loves it and it keeps him on task as well. He also gets super excited when he can work on his own. I wish my school has I pads because I truly think it would benefit him.

If ipads can more than double a child's vocabulary, that has autism, than every child in needs to have access to this tool. These devises are more effective if introduced early in a child's educational career. If an autistic child only knows ten words at the start of the program, they might learn up to one hundred words at the end of the six month program. This can greatly improve a child's social development and help them express themselves better. Every school should look into obtaining these programs for the better of their learning disabled students.
