A few weeks ago we did a project about internet safety. There are lots of things online that can be harmful to our students if they are not informed. One question that gets asked a lot is who should teach our students about internet safety? Some people think it is the parents and others the teachers. Even teachers can't decided on what teacher should teach the kids about internet safety Some think just the computer teacher. In an ideal world how should we be teaching internet safety>

In an ideal world, the students shouldn't have to learn internet safety. However, since the world itself is not ideal, I find that whomever is asking a student to use the computer, should teach internet safety. If a parent allows their child to use a tech device, then I would expect them to teach their child the proper use and safety procedures. Since not all households have a technology device, I would expect all teachers who use technology and allow their students to use technology in the classroom to go over internet safety. This way students are all exposed to internet safety rules and procedures.

Yes in an ideal world...things would be so much easier! But I agree with you if the parent decides to allow their child to use technology then they should teach them everything there is to know about it.

Yes I agree that the parents should teach and explain to their children about internet safety. I also believe internet safety should be taught at school since it will be used at school as well.

Yes I agree also that parents should be teaching their kids about internet safety. Even if they are getting that instruction at home they need to be getting that at school as well. For me at the start of every school year, and maybe every project, student's should be reminded about internet safety.

I also agree that students should get repeat instruction on internet safety. We stress safety and seat belts daily and that is just the first example that comes to mind. This will always be an ongoing topic that deserves to be addressed.

As in all things good, there can be unintended consequences, the internet is no exception. The internet was originally used only by the government and the military with very strict guidelines on security. Now that the entire world has access to the net we definitely have security issues, the worst being child predators. Internet security should start at home since most households have access to the internet. Along with that effort the advent of smart phones further complicates internet security issues. Most smart phones have internet access through 3G and 4G networks.

I believe when it comes to internet safety it must be taught at home and at school. If the family does not have internet at home it is not possible for parents to help, if left alone to an overburdened teacher some points may be left out. We need to not only teach safety but provide a safe environment, making certain that students can not access certain websites.

Agreed! Both teachers and parents need to make sure the devices students are using are as kid friendly as possible, with little change of them accessing anything inappropriate or unsafe.

I dont really agree it should be taught both places. It should only have to be reinforced by the teachers because the discipline should start at the home.

I agree with Colie. It should definitely start with the parents. Teachers can go over key points, but the parents need to lay the foundation. They can talk to their child solo, and be sure that they understand everything, rather than a teacher talking to 20+ children at once.

I believe it should be taught at both places if teachers and parents are on the same page. This might be the issue but if they are on the same page the more the child hears it from multiple authoritative figures I believe the better.

I agree that teachers should reinfore while parents should discipline however, the problem is half the time parents aren't doing the discipline. A reoccuring problem we see in the public school system is the fact that some students don't even know if they will get supper at night, I doubt many will sit and talk to them about internet safety. Therefore, that's where I feel computer teachers or classroom teachers may have to do the job and only because it's being used in the classroom.

But if students are really first introduced to the internet and technology at school, it needs to be taught there as well.

I believe teachers are already overtaxed in today’s classroom, with managing IEP’s, ESL, SPED, meeting numerous standards in curriculum, e.g. No Child Left Behind, Race to the Top, GEL’s, other DESE standards, and the list goes on. Adding the burden of overseeing internet security for a classroom full of students is just one more thing that searchers do not need on their plate. I agree that teachers should make sure that students are following rules in terms of which sites are appropriate and which ones are not, other than that, the student needs to follow the rules for security.

Internet safety should be taught at both home and school. Most students these days use the Internet at school and at home, and it's both the teacher and the parents' responsibility to keep children safe.

Good thinking on the safety tips page! I agree that students need the knowledge from both aspects. The more information spread about it, the better. People do not realize how easy it is to set themselves up for failure by handing out information on different websites. Even websites that seem to be trusting can sell information. Students who are not properly education on safety may fall for the tricks of the trade such as signing up to receive free items.

The internet safety page is a great idea and should be required on all class websites created by teachers. I think it helps when schools can set up security for internet usage by using firewalls and programs that block certain websites to protect students, but they can't safeguard them from all websites that collect and sell information. Too many students believe websites are trustworthy and harmless so they voluntarily enter their information to sign up things on websites, which makes it even more important to teach internet safety starting when they are in the elementary years.

I like the idea of the safety tips page. Especially for parents that maybe hadn't thought about going over internet safety yet with their child. This can encourage them to sit down with their child.

I agree that all children should be taught both at home and at school as it is both the teacher and the parents responsibility.

That is such a though question. Should the parents or should the teachers? Honestly things like that should be taught by the parent. and enforced again by all parties or ppl that will be teaching and using technology. The main source of internet safety should come from the home. They just dont pay teachers or educators enough to keep putting more and more responsibilities on them. If you are going to start asking for more and more from them, their pay should go up and up. Its not their jobs to raise the child, just to educate them.

I agree that parents should take the majority of the responsibility, but what about the homes that do not have internet or exposure to devices? We cannot punish children and put them at risk because of that. It only takes a small amount of time at the beginning of the school year to go over safety protocol and to periodically reinforce it.

As they say, "It takes a village to raise a child." Technology isn’t going to go away and will continue to rapidly increase in the future. Since we can’t avoid it, we might as well prepare out children for it. Currently, there are children around the, who at a very early age, have access to a variety of technology that utilizes the internet. Both in an ideal and the real world today, teaching technology and internet safety should be a shared responsibility of parents and educators to make sure our children are protected and practicing safe habits when using the internet. Internet safety needs to be taught by parents at home beginning at an age when technology is first introduced to a child just like we teach other important safety topics such as strangers, fires, and wearing a seatbelt. If parents introduce internet safety and habits to establish a foundation at home, teachers can reinforce it and teach students to continue practicing safe internet habits when utilizing technology at school. If teachers are going to require students in their classes to use websites or other online resources, then it becomes their responsibility to make sure they are using them safely. As with other school related topics, we are going to help children most when there is a joint partnership between parents and teachers regarding internet safety.

Anytime that a student is using a computer in an educational setting, internet safety should be touched on before use ensues. Even if it's just a brush up on some things to remember because teachers and computer teachers have already gone over all of what they should be aware of. However, I do think that most children that have a computer at home should already be aware of internet safety when it comes time to use it in the classroom. I think that it is mainly the parents responsibility to instill good internet safety rules in their child. They need to prepare them for times when they are not around, like at school. A teacher can only watch over so many students at a time, and sometimes students just don't pay attention. So it is important that parents go over things one on one with their child before they are exposed to the internet in a school setting around their peers.

I agree with the majority of the class that it should be parents and teachers ensuring students are safe. I know at home my children can only go onto sites that I have approved, they know they cannot click on any pop-ups (or just close them out), and let me know if anything happens. But, again, students may not have internet at home. Part of being a teacher is teaching responsibility and being a safe and productive person. That includes technology. We cannot assume that students know as much, or more, than we do.

Yes I agree with some of the points you have made with your reply. While some people have posted it is the parents responsibility to ensure their children are adequately trained in internet safety, we as teachers have no way of knowing if they have been. There is no guarntee that a parent has taken the time to go over safety protocol with their child.

You make a good point that students may not have internet at home. We can't assume that they learn internet safety from thier parents if they don't even have regular access. All the more reason for us to push it at school.

I believe in an ideal world internet safety should be taught by both parents and teachers, but there has to be consistency. In an ideal world their would be consistency and the more children hear about internet safety and how important it is I feel like the better they will respond to what is being taught to them.

Students should be taught by educators and parents alike, when it comes to internet safety. We teach them to speak, read and write at both places so, why not continue with the serious issue of internet safety? In my opinion, the would respond knowing that their safety is a major concern at school.

Before any child is unleashed into the tech world I believe they should be taught and have some guidelines given by those who are providing the technology. Whether it be the parent, grandparent, classroom teacher, computer teacher, or guardian. It doesn't hurt for the child to hear it more than once either. As I was conducting research for various websites and information to add to my website about internet safety I found a wealth of information. It doesn't hurt for children to hear and see many resources concerning internet safety. Therefore, I feel the responsibility should be shared among all those who are responsible for the child.

Just like any type of safety, internet safety should be inlaid in every part of school. Any time students are using or discussing the internet, they should be taught wise choices in using the technology. Every adult in the school building has the job of keeping students safe and should be prepared to give them tips and ideas for using the web safely. In an "ideal world," internet safety would be written into the state and federal standards and students would be assessed on the knowledge. It is a scary world and while we have engrained into kids not to talk to strangers on the street, we and they tend to forget that strangers on the internet can be equally as dangerous.

I agree that internet safey should be included in all aspects of school, particularly because of the amount of technology use increasing in school. It should be part of everyone's job from the librarian to teachers, and I really liked your idea of having internet safety included in standards and having students complete an assessment to ensure they understand the information.

In a perfect world parents and teachers would teach children about internet safety. I mean there are things that it is obvious that children shouldn't see on the internet and that should be stuff taught in the classroom and then there are things that parents don't want there kids to see and its there job to teach them what they believe to be something that doesn't need to be seen.

In a perfect world, we wouldn't need to go over internet safety and people are smart enough to not create any of the dangers we have out there. Unfortunately that is not the case. I do believe though that both the schools and parents should be educating students on using the internet safely. I also believe though that internet safety cannot be just the focus. We want to instruct our kids on how to avoid those places that can and may cause them to be in danger and to not create an unsafe environment as well. I believe a huge part of the battle lies at home with the types of values that parents are passing on to their kids. It is easy to say that if we teach them the proper way to use the internet but if there is not constant reinforcement of the idea then we are doing this for nothing. Some students will let you talk until you are blue in the face and will still go out and put themselves and others in danger.

In an ideal world, the internet would secure itself but, it is not! I also think the security issues should be addressed both at school and at home. As a responsible adult, the person that introduces the device or requires the use in the classroom should be responsible for teaching the proper and secure use of the device and web accessibility.
