Something to ponder.....even if a large group of students say they rather have a real textbook is it what they are going to buy? What if you can get the E text cheaper what would you get?

I have never purchased an e-textbook because I prefer to have the paper copy in my hand when it comes to information for my classes. I love to read e-books when I am reading other items but I highlight and tab too many items in my printed book to easily part with it.

I can definitely see all the advantages that you talk about. I like the idea for being able to search for things easier and highlighting without worry about a resale value plus anything that saves some money is good for me! I do like the traditional textbook though. I have never had the opportunity to purchase an e textbook since I have not taken a class that has had one. I am unsure which I would prefer since I have not had that opportunity.

I agree with you. I LOVE etextbooks, and anytime I can get them I do. I have so many textbooks that I have to carry with me for teaching clinicals, that anytime I can purchase an e-version I do. I am also considering purchasing a tablet just for the purposes of being able to carry more of my books with me easily on a tablet.

We're at a point right now that our district USA BYOD district. But, we are economically disadvantaged as well. Not all kids have access to tech at home and school. Ebooks are quite the discussion as we don't know what to do. Kids check out the cd version of my book, but not sure how often it gets used. Though, how often is the hard back version used? I teach chemistry though, which may change the scenario.

I agree with you about having the hard copy instead of e-textbooks. I think it is a great idea and love my Fire but only for books, when it comes to textbooks I want the hard copy. I think it is just easier to go back and forth and mark my page than flipping to pages on a tablet.

I like digital copies, you can do whatever you want to on the page, like hightlights, write something, draw, everything and with one touch and can erase all that. For study definnely a digital copy, but for a fun book where you justa want read it, i would go for a hard copy, like lord of the rings

I agree completely! I bought an Ipad my junior year of college because I thought that I would like to use the tablet and buy e-books instead of text books. I quickly found out that I was wrong and I did not like the e-books. I am one of those people who highlights, tags pages, writes all over everything and uses a book well. You cant do that on a tablet. It was the worst money I have ever spent and eneded up buying all of my books that semester anyhow.

I llike being able to mark pages, to write on my text or highlight important areas of the text that will be on test, i dont own a kindle or anything but it seems like the pages are there you really cant grab 50 pages and turn to a different chapter if you need to...

I agree, I completely prefer to have a hard copy in my hands because it is easier to share information with people that you are studying with because you can quickly flip back and forth between pages that are in different chapters without having to scroll through 50 pages just to find the one that you want. Also since I have children that like use my I Pad and then not recharge it, it is quite inconvenient when you are try to read something and then the I Pad dies. At that point having a hard copy tends to have a significant advantage to E Text.

I agree about being able to flip the pages, and earmark pages, etc. I tend to do the same, I tend to have my personal books on e-book, and some textbooks as an ebook and some available textbook. I really like e-books and really wish that all of our textbooks were in e-format.

I also agree about having a hard copy in my hand. I feel that I understand things better when it is a hard paper copy that I am reading instead of on a tablet or something. I understand being green and not printing and using everything through electronics. Everyone is different and has their own ways of doing things.

I feel that what that school in Georgia is doing would be the best way to start implementing this into the classroom. I feel that if more and more schools started to do this for their students their students may get more engaged in classes that have over looked for years, such as history classes if they were more interactive more students may start to get into history then the ones that already do.

For English class, I think the tablets would be great! I know a lot of teachers complain about storage space - lots of books take up a lot of room! Not to mention, books aren't always taken care of. I know when I was in high school the books were always torn and pages ripped, etc. Being able to get a collection of books and using a tablet, the students could have access to a better variety and they could all be easily stored on it! I would think that would save money in the long run too.

I think that school had a great idea of how to provide their students with the advantages of electronic resources while removing the biggest obstacle - cost - from the equation. I think schools that choose to go this route definitely need to provide the devices to their students.

I like the idea of the tablets as well because it is a lot easier to keep a tablet safe than it is to keep text books in god condition. I think that instead of making kids keep tablets at the school, the school should check them out to the students at the beginning of the year and then collect them at the end of the year. If a student doesn't return the tablet at the end of the year, and\or a student moves away and does not return the tablet, the school can stop their class registration for the next year, or hold transcripts until the tablet is returned or has been compensated for. This option would allow the students to use their tablets at home where they do most of their studying. Even though I really do prefer hard copies of books I do see the benefits of being able to carry all the books in my course load on one small tablet. It negates the excuse of I forgot my book, and it allows for students to share information with each other and sync notes if a friend had to miss class.

CourseSmart sounds like a very interesting program. As a teacher, I think it would be very benificial to know the amount of reading students are doing. Some will always find a way to get around this or trick you - but in the end their test grades will reflect that they do not know the information. To me this is punishment enough. I have often wondered how much reading students do in other classes. This would help teachers to know this, and it would also help in planning lessons. If a student has to read a ton in one class one night, another teacher could lighten the load of out of class reading for their class for that night. I think it could also help with cross-curricular assignments.

This article talks about the future of E Texts as Technology continues to advance. At the end of the article there is a discussion forum that brings a lot of good arguments to the table. The one that really caught my attention was when an individual talked about reading an adventure story about Greek mythology, and there was a reference that he did not know so he had to pull out his laptop to find out what it was. Then the individual talked about if the text would have been E Text then he could have quick searched the reference right from the text itself. I am a person that would rather have a book in hand, but when you look at the argument from that angle that would much more beneficial for students as they are reading through texts book.

I asked my daughter her opinion about etextbooks to see how she felt about it. Her replied was similar to what you said about being able to search for something when she didn't know what it meant. She loves the idea that she can do a search for words by simply tapping the word. She also liked being able to see other reference materials that may go along with the text - videos or other articles, etc. I've always been a hard copy person as well, but my husband bought my tablet this past spring and I've read more since I've had it!

E Text are a hard one for me. There are classes in undergrad I would have LOVED them for and others not at all. Music History would have been so nice to have the E Text for. We had a huge text book that we used for two semesters. We also had like 14 CDs (if these had been MP3 files I would have loved that) with all of the music we needed and two books of scores that went with the CDs. We also had to have recordings of all 9 Beethoven Symphonies. I do think that I would have wanted hard copies of the scores. I am not a fan of reading music off of a tablet/computer. I do love having a PDF to teach from that I can put on the data projector or SMART board to use with the kids.

E texts would be great for my English Comp classes and literature classes where we had about 4 different books for the class it is easier to replace the texts for easier more relavent sources, as far as sharing books, this would be huge problem for me because i share books because of how expensive they are regardless of the price its still a price and for a college student that price is costly so sharing it books for me would still be a way to go, maybe high school can be a little different but then you have to worry about the parents issue with it as well

I know on my amazon account, you can choose which device you want to download the text too. So maybe you can share by logging the to person into your acct and having the file sent to that device? Haven't actually tried that yet, but wondering if that would work.

I used my locker my Freshman year when I was at Parkway Central but when I moved to COMO and went to Rock Bridge I NEVER used my locker. We had block so I only had 4 classes a day and many of my classes we had music that we left in class most of the time. Even if I had my music it was still lighter then a text book. My first two years at RBHS I did not drive so I had all of my book all day. My senior year I would go to my car and switch at lunch. At CMU the campus is so small that going back to my room during the day was not that big of a deal so I only every had two books at a time. I still had a full back back all the time. I think about my work bag and all I have is a pencil bag, my iPad mini and a note book - I love it!

I really enjoy ebooks, and would love for all of our textbooks to be in an e-book format for the courses that I teach. My house and car at times looks as though it is raining books.
